The company that owns the Pere Marquette hotel in Peoria says they could have stayed open for March Madness. Councilman Spain counters that the company was in bankruptcy and couldn’t have stayed opened.
So, I have to ask. If a hotel, across the street from the Civic Center can’t stay in business, how can a new hotel across the street from the Civic Center make it?
Is it because of the skywalk that will connect to the Civic Center? If so, then why not build a skywalk from the Pere to the Civic Center and save millions?
How can this project, costing millions in tax payer money via bonds ever make money? Hell, I think an fifth grader can see through this. but hey! Who’s smarter than a fifth grader? Apparently not 8 members of our city council.

Good question! Good answer - just build the skywalk - period. Why is a skywalk necessary? To keep the visitors safe from the thugs/bullets rampant, inherent with reduced-budget police! Who can believe this stuff? Truth really is stranger than fiction!
Good question - good answer! Why not just use common sense, save money, build a skywalk: problem solved. Why is a skywalk necessary? To keep visitors safe from the thugs/bullets, inherent from budget-cut police force. Who would believe this stuff? Truth really is stranger than fiction!
The answear is to the left, "Better than nothing!" slogan.
1: The traffic on Fulton is not that bad.
2: I could be way off but my first impression is that building a skybridge from the Pere would be a problem.
Regrettably, projects developed in Peoria are advanced by people who have tantrums and pitch in until they get their way. Their tenacity is astounding ... think of a small child throwing a tantrum because this child feels entitled to have one of whatever this child sees. Projects which are in the best interest of a small group of individuals at taxpayer's expense.
There used to only be Gary Sandberg voting against this nonsense. Now there is Weaver and Akeson ... now we are at 3. Making progress. Please remember to vote next year for at least 3 more individuals to get to 6 so that taxpayer's dollars will stop being used on worthless baubles.
If this tenacity was used for better purposes, Peoria would not be in the sewer ... regrettably not the case.
I like this quote from Councilwoman Akeson ...
"From the beginning, I've been against the way the deal is structured," Akeson said. "I'm a firm believer there is a time and a place for the public to contribute its money, but it has to be for a project that is overwhelmingly in the best interest of everyone."
Let's keep our shculder to the wheel to get some more likeminded individuals to run next year who will help us get to 6 councilpersons with backbone.
Remember Spain has to enusre that Heartland Partnerships gets its feed from Peoria' tax dollars. The council, I believe, viewed Matthews closing the Pere as progress, when actually the funding still hasn't been in place. Smoke and mirrors again to deflect people away from what the city council has wasted our tax $ on. Spain manipulates. He pretends he's out of the loop when it serves his purpose, which, it to get to higher office. He'll get that by making rich friends more money.
I'm sure there will be a lawsuit filed soon, if there hasn't been already, against the Diocese. Matthews is known for threatening to sue when he doesn't get his way and I'm sure this will be no exception.
Build a skywalk to the Embassy. The river absorbs a lot of the gunshot noise. Problem solved.
I read about all the holiday parties and wedding receptions that were booked in December at the Pere, that had to be cancelled due to the warp-speed decision to close. I think the owners of the Pere might have made some money in December, considering what a busy month it has been for them in the past.
Word on the street has it the law suit has been filed and delivered to the Diocese. Will someone check on this?

I hope the Catholic Diocese asks for a 31 day extension.
Chef Kevin,
If you don't think that the city council won't bend over backwards, extend a deadline, try to take the Diocese land by force to get this project done, don't be fooled. What they then would face would be a voting block agsinst them and the money that rolls to their campaigns would be cut off. That and ONLY that will get their attention.
Drag the pile of bricks to the river and call it a Casino!
Maybe because the new hotel will be up to date, not shabby and people will be comfortable there.
the article in the paper basically states that with the Marriot name and the taxpayer back, the hotel should be able to pay back the bonds. So in 30 years, we might get some property tax revenue. Course in thirty years, it will be run down flea bag of motel and will be sucking more tax money for the second rehab that they must have to survive. and the civic center still will be in the red. What a joke, vote these idiots out.
